The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government - lest it come to dominate our lives and interests. -- Patrick Henry

Reason #11

Governing decisions are better made at a local level

The clearest benefit is in the use of tax dollars. In Texas, for every dollar that is sent to the federal government, a little over $0.80 is returned to Texas. That's almost 20% overhead for taking our money and deciding how we should spend it. You see, when the money comes back from the feds, it has strings attached. States must spend the money on certain programs or risk losing the money altogether.

Education is another sensitive issue that is best left to the people closest to the problem. It's also another federal problem where compliance with certain federal mandates is necessary to get the money... money that once belonged to Texans, was taken by the feds, then sent back to us (with a smile, I'm sure). The most recent example of federal overreach is Common Core, an educational curriculum being pushed onto the states through federal programs with strings attached.

The federal highway program is another example. The feds try to tell us how and where to spend our highway dollars. I believe we have some pretty smart Texans who can determine where to spend our highway dollars.

Housing is another example. Take our money, then offer to give it back to us if we build certain types of housing in certain areas, and offer the housing to the public under special programs. What could be more invasive? Texans know what kind of housing we need. We'll build it with our own money, thank you very much.
