The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government - lest it come to dominate our lives and interests. -- Patrick Henry

Who we are

Reasons to Secede was founded by concerned Texans who wish to protect the values and accomplishments of the State of Texas. We are not a bunch of radical malcontents who hate authority, think President Lincoln operated outside the bounds of the US Constitution, or wish to seek revenge on the Union. As a matter of fact, we think the Union is a pretty good place to be. We believe the Union, over the last 220+ years, has been the greatest undertaking of humankind in the world's history.

Our concern is for our future. We believe that the current state of our Union is one that could be harmful to the fortunes, lifestyles, and values that exist in the State of Texas. We believe that a very strong message should be sent to Washington, letting our national leaders know that we don't support the direction they are taking the country, and the celerity with which unwanted change is being forced upon us. We believe that if sweeping changes aren't made in Washington, we may not feel so fondly about the Union in the coming years.

We believe that Texas has done it right. And we don't want our efforts being used to support a Union that doesn't support us. We'd like to work with the Union to make sure that this great country remains great... that it continues to be a beacon of hope to the world, and a place where personal liberty is charished. And we don't want the Union to use the vast resources of the State of Texas to shore up the losses from poor decisions by other states and by the Union itself.

In short, we like Texas the way it is. We like having no income tax. We like having a balanced budget. We like living in a state that has no debt. We like the way we treat each other and the way we treat visitors. We're an independent people and we really don't like being told what to do by a federal government that appears to be out of control.
